Why babies cry at night excessively

Here are the possible reasons why your baby will cry suddenly:

1. Hunger

The foremost reason why your baby cries at night is hunger. As an infant is dependent on his or her mother for his bodily needs, he asks for all needs by weeping.

Most children who are apt to cry at night do not get their diet on time. As a result, when their body falls short of energy, they start crying. Their crying expresses their need for food. There are signs that tell you that your baby is hungry.

This is caused by the untimely intake of food. This is the most common reason which parents do not consider if their baby cries at night. If the mother does not feed the child before sleep, the child is most likely to start crying at night.

2. Digestion Problem

Till the age of six months, the child relies upon the mother-milk for fulfilling his or her bodily needs. After six months, parents usually start offering different digestive foods to babies.

Although most of these diets are digestive, sometimes a little more quantity of food causes a digestion problem in the body.

Children do not have a strong digestive system. Therefore, it is not possible for them to digest every type of food. In many cases, the child cries at night if the food remains undigested in his or her body.

3. Inappropriate Environment

The surroundings of the child influence his behavior to a larger extent. Therefore, in some cases, parents do not care about the environment of the child. Many children start crying at night when the environment is not suitable for them.

In the winter season, children cry at night due to the cold environment. In these cases, parents do not cover up the child with warm clothes and a blanket.

Likewise, it happens in summer due to hot temperatures and mosquitoes. Moreover, even a little intensity of noise can awaken the child.

4. Uncomfortable Posture

A great many children develop the habit of crying at night if the parents fail to prepare for him or her a comfortable place to sleep. For example, if the child is sleeping on an itching or hard surface, it discomforts him or her.

For this reason, he or she starts crying. In such cases, the cry is a signal for demanding a displacement. The child, by crying, asks the parents to take him or her somewhere else, which is comfortable. If this reason persists, the child has more chances of facing bodily pains.

5. Allergic Conditions

Not every baby has the same expectations of the environment. Some infants are even allergic to some external factors. For example, smoke, fragrances, foods, and many others.

Whenever the child is exposed to what he is allergic to, he starts crying. It is up to the parents to figure out what disturbs their infant.

If your baby cries at night, try to make changes in his diet or environment. So that you will come to know the allergic factors which cause him or her to weep. Unless you do so, the problem will not be solved.

6. Night Terror

Besides the physical factors, there are a number of psychological causes as well which make your baby cry at night. A night terror is a condition in which the child gets terrified by an unusual vision of a person or thing.

It usually happens when the child fails to recognize you after suddenly waking up at night; darkness also makes visions scarier for your babies.

This also happens because of the relocation or replacement of things in the room. Another reason for this is that you have something unusual in the room like a painting, photo or an antique.

7. Nightmares

Like adults, the perception of the child is influenced by his conscious, sub-conscious and unconscious spheres of mind. This is another very important and common reason why your baby cries at night.

If the child sees something scary or horrific in his or her dream, he wakes up suddenly and starts crying.

Nightmares are unavoidable in early childhood because the mind is in the earlier stages of development. It is for this reason that children suddenly start crying at night during sleep.

Tips to console the crying baby

  • Take care of the diet table of your child. Give him or her food timely without any delay. Make changes in the diet table if needed. Make sure to give your baby something to eat before sleep.
  • Give digestive food to your baby. Do not give hard-to-chew and hard-to-digest food to him or her. Consult the physician before giving anything other than the mother-milk.
  • Try to cover up your child with warm clothes and blankets in the cold weather. If it is extremely cold, warm your room with a heater.
  • In summers, make sure your child is not sweating. Give him or her mild air so that he may not be affected by the hot weather.
  • Make sure there is not something noisy around.
  • Check if the child is lying comfortably. If you see him or her turning here and there, change the posture before the child starts crying.
  • Figure out what your child is allergic to. Remove the allergic factor from the room. Avoid smoking or perfuming near the sleeping child.
  • Do not turn OFF the light if your baby is under the age of two. Darkness increases the possibility of night terror in children.
The reason No. 6 and 7 might be strange and you may not believe that, but the truth is that these might be the true reasons your baby is crying uncontrollably.

Once the baby misperceives you as a stranger, she/he will not listen to anyone and keep crying hysterically. You can only make him/her silent by singing a mother song loudly and swinging your baby in arms.
